Preparing for your son to leave for college for the first time? It can be a bit overwhelming trying to decide what to pack and what to leave behind. It’s easy to want to bring everything, but the reality is, many items will go unused…not to mention there is very limited space in a dorm room!
I have sent three kids off to college, two of them boys, and have learned a few things along the way packing for these young men:
1. Sending a year’s supply of cleaning products is a waste of space. He’s not going to clean like you would clean. Not even close.
2. Overall, they are too cool (or too lazy) to be bothered. With anything. Period. So be prepared to do much of this on your own.
Here is a printable checklist of the essential items needed in your son’s dorm. Please note that some universities may have different rules on allowing a mini refrigerator or microwave in the room. You will also want your son to check with his roommate to see about sharing items (fridge, microwave, TV, printer, etc).

I highly recommend joining the school’s Facebook group for parents. This will be a great way to find the answers to many of the questions you may have about the dorms.
The following are some of our favorite college dorm room essentials. These are products we have used and recommend.
